Carney Hospital (first) opens.
June 9, 1863
Named for clothing merchant and benefactor Andrew Carney, it is located on the former Howe estate on Old Harbor Street. The first Catholic hospital in New England, it is incorporated in 1865. Operated by the Daughters of Charity “to afford relief to the sick poor,” it also provides treatment for returning Civil War veterans. Sister Ann Alexis is the first director. The hospital is expanded into a new building (second) in 1893*, and moves to its current location (third) in Dorchester in 1953.* It is subsequently purchased by the for-profit Steward Hospital, which declares bankruptcy and closes the hospital in 2024.
